US Homeland Security Shutdown May Cause Airport Delays, Travel Groups Warn
February 14, 2026
The US federal government partially shut down at midnight on Saturday after Congress could not agree on funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Travel groups and airlines warned that this could cause airport delays. Airlines for America said, "Travellers and the US economy cannot afford to have essential TSA personnel working without pay." TSA workers may call in sick, leading to longer wait times and flight disruptions.
The shutdown happened because Democrats wanted stricter immigration rules linked to funding the DHS. They pushed for banning immigration agents from wearing face masks, better ID for officers, and stricter warrant rules following protests and deaths in Minnesota.
Senate Democrats blocked two funding bills as these did not include their demanded immigration reforms. The current funding only covered DHS operations till mid-February. President Donald Trump said on Friday, "we'll see what happens," about reaching a deal and added, "We always have to protect our law enforcement."
Besides TSA, the US Coast Guard is also affected. Vice Admiral Thomas Allan warned that 56,000 Coast Guard workers might not get paid if the shutdown continues, causing some missions to pause.
Unlike last year’s 43-day full government shutdown, the current one may cause less chaos since the Federal Aviation Administration is funded for the year. However, the situation could worsen if DHS funding gaps continue. Congress is on break until 23 February but could return early if a deal nears. DHS has $165 billion from a prior act that might help cover some funding issues during the shutdown.
