Taiwan Leader Warns Defense Budget Delay May Cut US Arms Priority
February 14, 2026
Taiwan leader William Lai Ching-te has warned that delays in passing a special military budget could slow weapons deliveries and push the island down the US arms supply priority list. The NT$1.25 trillion (US$40 billion) budget plan, aimed at strengthening Taiwan’s defense, has been repeatedly blocked by opposition parties. Lai stressed that this spending "is not an act of provocation" but a "necessary step to safeguard security and maintain regional stability." He appealed for all lawmakers to start a full review of the budget when the legislature reopens on February 24. Admiral Mei Chia-shu, Taiwan's chief of general staff, said Taiwan has already coordinated pricing, delivery, and supply schedules with the US. Analysts warn that ongoing delays could weaken how Washington and regional capitals see Taiwan’s defense resolve amid rising competition with Beijing.
