Transport authorities have warned of heavier traffic on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge starting Sunday. This is due to the closure of a temporary link bridge in Zhuhai for repairs, combined with increased travel for Lunar New Year. The temporary link between Zhuhai Port and Qinglu South Road will be closed until further notice. Hong Kong’s Transport Department urged travelers to plan ahead and use public transport if possible. Drivers can reach Zhuhai Port via the G94 Pearl River Delta Ring Expressway. The temporary link was supposed to last only until the new municipal bridge opens by the end of 2027. However, heavy use caused safety issues earlier than expected. The closure may cause traffic jams on nearby roads because many vehicles will cross the border during the Lunar New Year holiday from Sunday to February 23. The mega bridge is one of the busiest border crossings. To ease traffic, shuttle buses on the bridge will run more often. The Transport Department said, "The Emergency Transport Coordination Centre operates round the clock to closely monitor the port traffic conditions and public transport services and to implement contingency measures when necessary to meet service demands." On a Facebook group for Hong Kong drivers heading north, member Gabriel Wu said only one route to Zhuhai Port is open now. This means all traffic will use the Gongbei Tunnel, causing it to be "terribly congested" during the holidays. Another member, Leung Sai-man, agreed and said congestion will worsen by vehicles cutting lanes without police control. The Immigration Department expects 11.38 million trips in and out of Hong Kong between Saturday and February 23. This is a 16 percent rise compared to the last Lunar New Year.
