Early morning darkness and poor visibility led to a fatal pile-up near Sulibele on Satellite Town Ring Road, Bengaluru, on February 13. Seven people, including five minor boys, lost their lives. Nandan (name changed), driving an SUV at 80-90 kmph to the airport, saw a tyre on the road just 40-50 metres ahead. He swerved sharply to avoid it and nearly lost control, hitting the side barrier but escaping with minor injuries. "It was pitch dark, and visibility was poor. I was depending entirely on my car’s headlights when, all of a sudden, I saw a tyre lying in the middle of the road," he recalled. Nandan described the terrifying moments when he also avoided the ripped-off truck chassis scattered on the road. The airbags deployed, and his emergency contacts were alerted by his smartwatch. Villagers report accidents happen every 15 to 20 days on this slope after Kambalipura bridge, a stretch with no street lights. Nandan and his cousin used mobile flashlights to warn other drivers until the site was cleared after nearly four hours. An NHAI team inspected the site on February 14 to assess safety measures. Police review CCTV footage showing high speed before the crash. Investigators are also addressing legal details involving the minor who drove one of the vehicles. One deceased was taken to Kerala; others were cremated in Bengaluru on February 14.
