Rio Police Wear Fancy Dress to Catch Phone Thieves at Carnival
February 15, 2026
Brazilian police have taken a creative approach to catch phone thieves at the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. Officers disguised themselves in fancy dress, wearing masks like Captain America, Batman, and Money Heist characters to blend in with the crowd. The stings took place during the popular festival, which attracts millions of people and sees a rise in petty crime.
Using drones, police spotted a woman stealing a phone and passing it to her male partner. Both were arrested on the spot. The suspects, who have 30 criminal records between them, tried tricks like the woman pretending to be pregnant to avoid arrest. Five stolen phones were recovered and will be returned to their rightful owners.
The operation is part of a wider effort called Operation Tracking. This state initiative has recovered over 13,000 stolen mobile phones and returned about 4,400 of them. Brazilian police are not alone in using fancy costumes; Peruvian officers also use disguises during special days to catch criminals, including dressing as superheroes and holiday characters.
Footage published by the police shows the masked officers leading the suspects to a police car, proving that costume and clever tactics can make a big difference in fighting crime during the lively Rio Carnival.
