Gunmen riding motorcycles attacked three villages in north-west Nigeria's Niger state early Saturday morning. At least 30 people were killed. Bandits shot or cut the throats of victims, set homes on fire, and kidnapped an unknown number of villagers. The villages hit were Tunga-Makeri, Konkoso, and Pissa. In Tunga-Makeri, police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun told AFP that six people died and some houses burned. Most deaths happened in Konkoso, where nearly all homes were destroyed and four women were abducted, according to witnesses. In Pissa, attackers burned a police station and killed one person. Reports vary, with Reuters saying about 32 deaths and AFP reporting at least 46. Bandits arrived on 41 motorcycles, each carrying two or three men. The attacks come weeks after a similar massacre nearby that killed over 100 people. Nigerian officials face growing pressure to stop the violence from armed gangs and jihadist groups, who have been increasingly active in the north-west and south-east regions. The US recently conducted strikes on Islamist militants in northern Nigeria and warned of further attacks if killings continue. Many victims of jihadist violence are Muslims, said monitoring organizations.
