Finance Minister Urges Private Sector to Drive Jobs as Population Surges; FIR Lodged Against Senator
February 15, 2026
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb warned on Saturday that Pakistan cannot manage a rapidly growing population alone. Speaking at the Pakistan Economic Growth Conference in Lahore, he said the country’s population could hit 400 million if the 2.5% growth rate continues. “So, you tell us who will run this country in such a situation,” he said, stressing that the private sector must take the lead in creating jobs.
He added, “The government alone cannot provide jobs to 250 million people. The private sector should drive the economy.” Aurangzeb urged business leaders to help control the population growth, pointing to Bangladesh’s successful population control.
The minister revealed that the government has registered an FIR against a sitting senator for alleged tax evasion. He also accused tobacco companies, except two, of not paying taxes and smuggling. “But we are not sparing them,” he said.
Mr Aurangzeb shared efforts to broaden the tax base using a phased approach, starting with the sugar industry, noting, “The PM has instructed us to start from the sugar sector since his family is involved.”
On economic plans, he said relief for the construction sector was in the works and would be announced soon by the prime minister. Support for the textile sector is under review, with a final decision expected in 10-12 days. The government is also considering reduced taxes on property to stimulate growth.
He highlighted the rise in IT exports as a hopeful sign and emphasized the need to repatriate export proceeds, currently stuck abroad. The country’s foreign exchange reserves are steadily improving.
Discussing inflation, Aurangzeb said it is at record lows, giving relief to the public. He acknowledged the salaried class bears a heavy tax burden but assured continued relief.
Earlier, former minister Gohar Ejaz warned heavy real estate taxes force investors to Dubai, where Pakistanis have bought $100 billion worth of properties. He urged tax cuts to boost local investment and economic growth.
