The UAE Ministry of Education has introduced strict rules on artificial intelligence use in schools from 2026. Students under 13 years old, or those in grades below Year 7 (Grade 6), are banned from using generative AI tools such as ChatGPT. Officials say younger children should develop critical thinking and social skills without AI. Older students can use AI, but only as a "tutor," not a "ghostwriter." AI use during exams is fully banned. Students must disclose AI help to teachers and show real understanding of AI-generated answers. The UAE also sets cultural limits on AI content: anything against Islamic values, national identity, or promoting violence, hate, misinformation, or illegal acts is forbidden. Privacy is a top priority. Schools cannot upload personal data—like names or photos—to AI platforms. Using unapproved AI services or bypassing firewalls is not allowed. Classroom recording with AI needs everyone’s consent. The Ministry wants AI to help learning, not replace human thinking. From 2025-26, AI will be taught as a subject from Kindergarten to Grade 12 by 1,000 trained teachers. The course covers AI ethics, data privacy, and technology’s role. The UAE’s clear message is that technology supports teachers but cannot replace the human mind.
