India added 52,537 megawatts (MW) of electricity capacity from all sources by January 31, 2026. This exceeds an 11% increase over last year's total installed power capacity. The Union Ministry of Power called it the highest ever yearly addition, beating the previous record of 34,054 MW in fiscal year 2024-25. Out of the total new capacity, 39,657 MW is from renewable sources. Solar power contributes 34,955 MW, while wind adds 4,613 MW. The combined renewable capacity now makes up 50.5% of India's total power generation capability. By the end of January, the overall installed capacity stood at 520,510.95 MW. Fossil fuels account for about 48% with 248,541.62 MW, and nuclear energy makes up 1.6% at 8,780 MW. This surge strengthens India’s position as a leader in clean energy growth, pushing renewable energy beyond half of the total power capacity.
