Two Indians Charged in New Jersey for Smuggling 19 kg Morphine-Laced Poppy Pods
February 15, 2026
Two Indian men in New Jersey have been charged for smuggling nearly 19 kilograms of dried poppy pods containing morphine. Authorities intercepted the shipment sent from the Netherlands to a private home in Bergen County, NJ. Karanjit Singh, 24, and Jagroop Singh, 25, stand accused of possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance, said Bergen County prosecutor Mark Musella. Homeland Security Investigations and US Customs and Border Protection seized the shipment in January, meant for delivery to a Wood-Ridge residence. Tests confirmed the poppy pods contained morphine, a controlled substance in the US. On January 30, detectives searched the home and found both men, along with the poppy pods and other drug distribution materials. Both were arrested and charged with second-degree possession with intent to distribute. They were sent to Bergen County Jail and appeared in court. Karanjit Singh was released pending further proceedings while Jagroop Singh stayed in custody. ICE placed detainers on both men, making them liable for deportation due to their crimes and non-citizen status. Separately, in Canada, Indian-origin truck driver Satnam Singh was arrested for smuggling 700 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in his vehicle. The drug bust occurred in November 2025, with charges announced recently by Canadian authorities.
