Arik Air Plane Suffers Engine Explosion, Makes Safe Emergency Landing in Benin
February 16, 2026
An Arik Air Boeing 737 flight from Lagos to Port Harcourt experienced a terrifying midair engine explosion on Wednesday. The left engine was shredded and charred as the plane flew. Passengers filmed the damaged engine and some screamed during the incident. Despite the damage, the plane safely landed in neighboring Benin on just one engine, carrying 80 passengers.
According to footage, the engine's fan blade failure tore the cowling apart and sent debris crashing into the fuselage and tail. Passengers recalled a loud bang on the left side while descending. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Board said the exact cause is still under investigation.
There were no injuries, but the aircraft suffered significant damage. A preliminary assessment team is on its way to secure the plane, collect evidence, and recover flight data and cockpit voice recordings. An Arik Air spokesperson expressed sincere apologies to the affected passengers for the disruption.
The incident was reported by multiple news sources including the New York Post, AirDataNews, and Jam Press. The quick response and calm handling helped avoid any tragedy during this daring emergency landing.
