Israel Restarts West Bank Land Registration, Sparking Fears of Palestinian Land Loss
February 16, 2026
Israel has restarted the land registration process in the occupied West Bank, a move not seen since 1967. Israeli rights groups warn this will speed up Palestinians losing their land. The government approved the plan on Sunday, led by far-right ministers Bezalel Smotrich, Yariv Levin, and Israel Katz. Israeli human rights group Bimkom said this legal move will "systematise the dispossession of Palestinian land to further Israeli settlement expansion and cement the apartheid regime." Michal Braier of Bimkom explained many Palestinians lack formal land registration or required papers, making it hard to prove ownership. Around 70% of West Bank land remains unregistered since Jordanian rule ended in 1967. Peace Now, an Israeli anti-settlement group, called this step a "full annexation" of Palestinian land. Hagit Ofran said Palestinians will rarely prove ownership of older documents dating back to British or Jordanian times, so land defaults to Israeli control. Israel's Supreme Court last month rejected petitions against this process, calling challenges "premature." Similar land registration in East Jerusalem from 2018 to 2024 led to almost no Palestinian ownership, with 99% registered to Israeli state or private owners, according to Bimkom. This process violates international law, including a 2024 International Court of Justice ruling that Israel's occupation and land expropriation in Palestinian territories is unlawful and must end quickly. Braier warned, "The government is not hiding its intentions. They want to expand settlements and push Palestinians into as small an area as possible." The new land registration process may speed up displacement and annexation in the West Bank under the guise of legal control.
