Chinese tech giant ByteDance has promised to limit its AI video-making tool, Seedance, after Disney threatened legal action. Disney sent a cease-and-desist letter accusing ByteDance of using a "pirated library" of Disney characters, including Marvel superheroes and Star Wars figures. Disney's lawyers said ByteDance committed a "virtual smash-and-grab" of their intellectual property. ByteDance told the BBC it "respects intellectual property rights and we have heard the concerns regarding Seedance 2.0." The company said it is "taking steps to strengthen current safeguards to prevent unauthorized use of intellectual property and likeness by users." ByteDance did not detail what these safeguards will be. Seedance creates videos based on short text prompts. Some videos show realistic battles, such as Star Wars' Anakin Skywalker and Rey fighting or Spider-Man versus Captain America. The app's latest version launched on February 12 and clips have gone viral online. Hollywood studios, represented by the Motion Picture Association, also demand Seedance "immediately cease its infringing activity." Actors’ union Sag-Aftra called Seedance's use "blatant infringement." The Japanese government has started investigating ByteDance over AI videos using popular anime characters. Similar AI tools face legal actions too. Last year, Disney and NBCUniversal sued AI image generator Midjourney for producing unauthorized copies of their works. The case is ongoing. Disney has also asked Google to stop generating its characters on Google’s AI platforms. ByteDance and other AI companies now face increasing pressure to respect copyright laws in their creative software.
