Hong Kong residents made around 1.39 million outbound trips in the three days before Lunar New Year's Eve. This is a 21.6% increase from the same period last year, when trips were 1.14 million. Inbound arrivals also rose by 5% to over 550,000. The longer holiday, including two weekdays off plus three Lunar New Year public holidays and adjacent weekends, created a nine-day break this year and last. In 2026, the festival also coincided with Valentine's Day on February 14, unlike last year. According to Immigration Department data from February 13 to 15, outbound trips reached 1.39 million, up from 1.14 million from January 25 to 27 last year. Arrivals from mainland China and overseas increased from 524,489 to 551,382 in the same period. Lai Wing-chun, chairman of the Hong Kong Wholesale Florist Association, noted that the overlap of Lunar New Year and Valentine's Day affected local florist sales. "Some shoppers used the same flowers for both celebrations," Lai said. Families typically spent about HK$1,000 (US$128) this year, similar to last year, with orchids remaining a popular Lunar New Year choice.
