WhatsApp Web Rolls Out Voice and Video Calls Globally; UAE Users Still Blocked
February 16, 2026
WhatsApp has started rolling out voice and video calling on WhatsApp Web globally. Users can now make and receive one-on-one calls directly from their browser without installing the desktop app. These calls are end-to-end encrypted, just like on mobile and desktop apps. Call icons are visible in chats so users can start calls instantly without opening the phone or desktop app. The feature is in beta and gradually expanding. WhatsApp plans to add group calls and call links later. However, in the UAE, WhatsApp voice and video calls remain blocked. UAE’s Telecom and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) only allows VoIP services from licensed providers. WhatsApp calling is not approved, so telecom companies like Etisalat and du block these calls on all platforms, including WhatsApp Web. Texting and media sharing still work fine in UAE on WhatsApp. For calls, UAE residents use licensed apps like BOTIM, GoChat, Voico, or global platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, which comply with local rules. The VoIP restrictions protect telecom revenues and maintain regulatory control. Though some industry discussions hint at possible future changes, no official updates have been made as of 2026. For now, WhatsApp Web calling is available globally where permitted, but UAE users must rely on alternative apps for internet calls.
