The Chinese region of Inner Mongolia plans to begin work this year on two new “flexible” power plants. These plants will mix coal and green energy to produce electricity. They will supply power to Shanghai and Jiangsu province in eastern China. This is a big change in how coal is used in the region. Instead of being the main energy source, coal will fill gaps when wind and solar energy cannot meet demand. Inner Mongolia holds about a quarter of China’s coal reserves but is shifting to blend coal with renewable energy. This approach aims to stabilize power supply while promoting green energy use.
