Hong Kong’s Consumer Council revealed that perfumes from Gucci, Bvlgari, and Acqua di Parma contain 10 types of fragrance allergens. These allergens can worsen skin conditions, especially for people with eczema. The council tested 40 perfume products and found Gucci's “The Alchemist’s Garden Tears from the Moon Eau de Parfum” priced at HK$2,850 per 100ml bottle among the affected items. Along with Gucci, Bvlgari’s “Allegra Passeggiata” (HK$2,260) and Acqua di Parma’s “Colonia Eau Cologne” (HK$997) also contained the allergens. The council warned that perfumes with high levels of fragrance chemicals might cause a “cocktail effect,” increasing health risks. It advised caution for people with eczema, pregnant or breastfeeding women, women planning to conceive, and families with young children. Each of these three luxury products earned only two out of five stars in fragrance allergen ratings. Only one tested perfume, “Warm Afternoon” by Korean brand a ddct (HK$593), was free from these allergens. Additionally, the watchdog found two perfumes containing BMHCA, a banned substance in the EU: “Eau De Toilette No. 18” by Hong Kong brand Scent With You and Japan’s “Halia nohea” by Ohana Mahaalo. The local product was removed from sale. The council suggested people with sensitive skin should spray perfumes on clothes instead of directly on skin. Compared to a 2018 test where 11 perfumes had the chemical DEP, only one brand still uses DEP now, showing some improvement in the industry. DEP is used to extend scent life but may be harmful with long or heavy use.
