Shivamogga airport in Sogane is set to have a night landing facility operational within seven months, around September-October 2026. Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) Chairperson S.G. Nanjayyanamath said the delay was due to technical needs beyond electrical work, which is now complete. The tender for the Doppler Very High Frequency Omni Range (DVOR) building is also finished, with soil tests done and work to start soon. DVOR aids air traffic control with navigation. The night-landing project costs a total ₹12 crore, including ₹5 crore for the facility alone. With this, flights to cities like Mumbai and Delhi could begin, meeting the demand according to Mr. Nanjayyanamath. He added, "Once the facility is ready, we can consider extending flight services to cities like Mumbai and Delhi. We believe there is demand for flight operations to Delhi and Mumbai from Shivamogga." He also said KSIIDC paid a ₹22 lakh penalty imposed by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in 2025, including interest, and the airport license has been renewed for three years. "Had it been paid earlier, we could have saved on the interest," he noted, admitting inefficiency caused the penalty. On Hassan airport, Mr. Nanjayyanamath mentioned delays due to land issues. Villagers who gave land want an 8-km road, as their path to the village was blocked after a compound wall was built. Also, the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) demanded ₹17.5 crore to shift a 220kV power line, which has been paid, but poles remain to be shifted. KPTCL has sent a revised estimate of ₹21 crore. The KSIIDC is addressing these hurdles with local officials.
