Pakistan and Austria Agree to Boost Ties, Fight Illegal Immigration
February 16, 2026
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held meetings with Austria's Chancellor Christian Stocker in Vienna on Monday. It was the first visit by a Pakistani prime minister to Austria since 1992. They discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties in many areas, including trade, investment, tourism, healthcare, education, and information technology.
The two leaders agreed to speed up signing memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in these fields. They also talked about global issues and stressed the importance of the United Nations for peace, security, and human rights. Both expressed their commitment to multilateralism and promised to support each other in international matters.
During the visit, PM Shehbaz invited Chancellor Stocker to visit Pakistan officially soon. They also met CEOs from Austria and Pakistan to boost government-to-government, government-to-business, and business-to-business cooperation. The prime minister invited Austrian companies to join the EU-Pakistan Business Forum in Islamabad in April.
PM Shehbaz stated Pakistan is working closely with Austria, France, and Germany to jointly stop illegal immigration. He emphasized, "Pakistan was absolutely against illegal immigration and was working with our European friends — Austria, France, and Germany — to jointly ban this illegal immigration [and bring it] to a grinding halt." Pakistan is also ready to meet Austria's demand for skilled labor under international certification rules.
The PM highlighted Pakistan's young population and the need to equip them with modern training in IT and artificial intelligence. He also spoke about Pakistan's strong potential in agriculture and invited Austria to share expertise in agricultural technology and product exports.
PM Shehbaz was welcomed with full honors upon arrival, marking 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The visit aims to inject fresh energy into Pakistan-Austria cooperation across various sectors.
