An agricultural worker named Yallappa, 45, died after a wild elephant attacked him in Pura village near Hunasehalli, Chikkamagaluru taluk on Monday. He was returning to his home after working in a coffee estate owned by Nagesh Gowda. Yallappa had moved from Hanagal taluk in Haveri district to Chikkamagaluru for work. Following the attack, people gathered at Balehonnur in N.R. Pura taluk to protest. They condemned the incident and demanded a permanent solution to the ongoing human-elephant conflict in the area. As the protest grew, officials took Yallappa’s body to Shivamogga for a post-mortem. Protesters blamed the Forest Department and called for senior district officers to meet them and promise long-term measures. They said, "The Elephant Task Force had been ineffective." They also criticized the lack of warning about the elephant’s movement. E. Shivashankar, Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF), met the protesters and said the department would start efforts to capture the offending elephant by Tuesday. He also promised to install solar fences and railway barricades to stop elephants from entering human areas. Police were present to manage the protest. Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Dayama and other officials visited the site and helped calm the crowd.
