The Nilgiris Collector, Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, started the planting season for the 128th flower show at the Government Botanical Garden in Udhagamandalam on Monday. She told reporters the flower show is most likely to be held in May 2026. "Elaborate arrangements are being made to showcase the diversity of plants at the garden," she said. Last year, 7.5 lakh flowering plants were planted. This year, the number will rise to 10 lakh. To catch the attention of locals and tourists, special ornamental flowers like Geraniums, Cyclamens, Balsams, Oriental and Asiatic Lilies, Dahlias, Begonias, Carnations, French Marigolds, Pansies, Petunias, Phlox, Zinnias, and many others will be grown. A total of 275 seed and sapling varieties were brought from Japan, America, Germany, the Netherlands, and various Indian states. These will be planted across the garden’s sections. Ms. Tanneeru said protective measures will be taken to avoid damage during planting. Appropriate supporting methods are in place. For the event, around 50,000 colorful potted flower plants will be displayed inside the Government Botanical Garden’s gallery and Glass House. Last year, 22.28 lakh tourists visited this popular garden. This year, about 25 lakh tourists are expected, the Collector added. Key officials from the State Horticulture Department also attended the event.
