February 16, 2026
At least six passengers died and 46 were injured when a bus overturned on the BR-153 highway near Marilia, southeastern Brazil. The accident happened early Monday when the bus's left rear tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control and the vehicle to skid off the road and flip over. The bus was carrying farm workers from Maranhao state to Santa Catarina state for apple harvesting. The Sao Paulo state fire department confirmed the crash on their X post. The conditions of the injured were not immediately clear. Fatal road accidents are frequent in Brazil. Earlier this year, 16 died in a bus crash in Alagoas, and 17 died in Pernambuco state after losing vehicle control. Brazil's Ministry of Transport reports over 10,000 traffic deaths in 2024 alone.
