On February 16, 2026, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, criticized the Union Government and BJP-ruled states for neglecting gig workers’ rights. He claimed “class and caste-based discrimination were deeply embedded in the sector” with little corporate accountability. Rahul Gandhi spoke after meeting a delegation of gig workers at his Parliament office during a ‘Jan Sansad’ session. He posted a video on Facebook where he said, “Today, gig workers lack stable income, social security, or basic amenities like medical care and insurance. Work-life balance is disrupted, and basic human dignity is being eroded.” Highlighting the challenges faced by women gig workers, he stated, “Women gig workers faced ‘double exploitation’, combining economic insecurity with a lack of safety and respect. Instead of support, they are being stripped of the dignity of their labour.” He pointed out that many gig workers belong to Dalit and tribal communities, which worsens their exploitation due to existing social hierarchies. Accusing the BJP government of failure, Rahul Gandhi remarked, “There are no strong laws, no social security, and no accountability for gig companies.” He praised Congress-ruled states for working on rights-based frameworks to provide social security, minimum wages, and equal treatment for gig workers. He added these states are drafting a model law for nationwide use. The opposition leader’s demand stresses urgent government action to safeguard gig workers in India.
