NHS Failing on MMR Vaccine; Measles Outbreaks Rise, Pharmacies Urged to Step In
February 17, 2026
MPs and health experts warn that children are at risk due to NHS failing to ensure MMR vaccinations. Vaccination rates in parts of England have dropped below 65%, matching countries like Afghanistan and Malawi. In Enfield, 60 children caught measles recently, with 15 hospitalised. The MMR vaccination rate there is only 64.3%, far below WHO’s recommended 95%. The outbreak has shocked public health officials. Five catch-up clinics are now running to vaccinate children missing doses. NHS England faces criticism for complacency as fully vaccinated five-year-olds fell from 88.2% to 83.7% in a decade. Labour MP Ben Coleman said, “The long-term decline in uptake of MMR and growing number of very worrying measles outbreaks... show that that system is clearly failing.” He added pharmacies are underused resources and called for them to deliver MMR jabs. The Royal College of Paediatrics supports this move, with its president Prof Steve Turner saying it would make vaccinations easier for families. The National Pharmacy Association also urges NHS to expand vaccine delivery beyond GPs and schools. Experts note some schools don’t participate in catch-up campaigns, especially faith schools. At a recent health committee meeting, Dr Mary Ramsay of UK Health Security Agency admitted GP opposition makes pharmacy involvement tough. The Department of Health hasn't confirmed pharmacy vaccination plans yet. Superdrug pharmacy is ready to help if asked. Prof Andrew Pollard warned the Enfield outbreak risks spreading further in London, with possible repeated outbreaks as unvaccinated children grow. DHSC stressed the need for timely MMR vaccinations, introducing earlier second doses and new chickenpox protection to improve child health. Urgent actions are underway to boost vaccination rates in London and defend children’s health.
