Tamil Nadu Pushes to Rebalance Union-State Power for Stronger Governance
February 17, 2026
India's Constitution was designed with a strong central government, influenced by the need for unity after Partition. But Tamil Nadu warns that this centralisation is now a burden. A High-Level Committee on Union-State Relations, set up by Tamil Nadu in April 2025 and chaired by Justice Kurian Joseph, has submitted its first report on February 16, 2026. The committee says the Union government should concentrate on truly national responsibilities. Meanwhile, states must get more freedom to govern themselves effectively. Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M.K. Stalin says that excessive central control reduces efficiency and stifles innovation. He adds that states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Maharashtra have shown how local initiatives can improve public health, education, and employment. The committee's report covers topics like the role of Governors, language policy, elections, education, health, and GST. It aims to restart a debate on how to balance power better between the Union and States. The idea is to strengthen both, making the Union focused and the States trusted partners in governing India. As M.K. Stalin puts it, the goal is a strong India built on shared responsibility, not over-centralisation.
