Hong Kong Customs Busts HK$140 Million Smuggled Medicines, Arrests Four
February 17, 2026
Hong Kong customs arrested four people and seized HK$140 million (US$18 million) worth of smuggled medicines. These include slimming and cosmetic injections, and erectile dysfunction pills. The suspects are two mainland Chinese men and two local women, aged between 26 and 61. The Customs and Excise Department said investigations are ongoing and more arrests may follow. Since January, enforcement uncovered 100,000 injections, 340,000 tablets and 60kg of controlled medicines in nine smuggling cases. Seven involved slimming injections; the rest were cosmetic anti-wrinkle injections and erectile dysfunction pills. Anthony Tang Cheuk-wai, divisional commander of the department’s special investigation division, said, "injectable products were in high demand in the city," with overseas purchases costing up to eight times less than legal prescriptions. He warned about medicine safety, saying, "Some of these medicines must be stored at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius (35 to 46 Fahrenheit)," but suspects avoided refrigeration to save costs and ease transport. This poses risks on quality and safety.
