Indonesia Prepares 8,000 Troops for Gaza Peacekeeping; Trump Pledges $5bn for Gaza Ahead of Board of Peace Summit
February 17, 2026
Indonesia is preparing up to 8,000 troops for possible peacekeeping deployment in Gaza by June. Army spokesperson Donny Pramono said 1,000 soldiers could be ready by early April, but final deployment depends on political decisions by President Prabowo Subianto. Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry clarified this participation in the UN-backed International Stabilisation Force does not mean normalizing relations with Israel, a country Indonesia does not recognize. The troops will have a non-combatant, humanitarian role and need the Palestinian Authority's consent. The ministry added, "Indonesia consistently rejects all attempts at demographic change or the forced displacement or relocation of the Palestinian people in any form," and stressed the troops won't demilitarize any party.
This comes as global leaders prepare for the first meeting of the Board of Peace, chaired by US President Donald Trump. President Subianto will attend the Washington event. The US-led body pledged over $5 billion for Gaza's reconstruction and secured commitments of thousands of personnel for stabilization missions. The meeting is set for February 19 at the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.
The European Union will join the meeting but only as an observer. EU Commissioner Dubravka Suica will attend the Gaza-focused part. EU spokesman Guillaume Mercier said, "The European Commission, it’s not becoming a member to the Board of Peace." Concerns remain among EU states about the Board's scope and compatibility with the UN Charter.
Italy expressed readiness to support Gaza’s stability by offering police training. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in Rome, "We are ready to train a new Gaza police force, and we are also ready to train a Palestinian police force." Italy will attend the summit as an observer.
These developments highlight growing international efforts to stabilize Gaza and support humanitarian goals amid complex political challenges.
