PTI Protest Shuts Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway, Stranding Thousands and Hurting KP Economy
February 17, 2026
The Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway (M-1) has been closed since last Friday by PTI activists at Swabi rest area. They demand early treatment for imprisoned leader Imran Khan, citing his "vision loss." This motorway links Peshawar to the rest of Pakistan and its closure is causing chaos. Traffic has shifted to the old Grand Trunk (GT) Road, which struggles with heavy congestion and potholes. PTI also blocks parts of GT Road, worsening delays. Commuters face long waits, some stuck for hours without public transport. Jan Mulk, a businessman, said he got caught in a massive traffic jam near Attock and had to return to Islamabad overnight due to no way forward. Transport fares have surged as drivers charge Rs1,000 for trips normally much cheaper. Khan Zaman Afridi, head of the KP Transporters Association, shared that daily departures from Peshawar bus stands have dropped from 3,000 to just 1,500 because of these closures. Trips that took two to three hours on the motorway now last over 10 hours on GT Road. Afridi condemned the KP government, stating, "It is ironic that the KP government is inflicting pain on its own people." Faisal Movers has halted its Peshawar-Islamabad services. Junaid Altaf, KP Chamber of Commerce president, blasted the shutdown: "Who are they troubling? Is it the people of KP or residents of Punjab and Sindh?" He added that the KP government has been absent from office while the blockade harms businesses reliant on timely raw materials. Malik Sohni of the Agriculture Produce Traders Federation revealed that vegetable prices in Peshawar have risen over 10% due to transport delays. Fresh supplies of potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and more from Punjab spoil in the traffic jam. "Prices automatically go up when fresh supplies don’t reach on time," he said. The ongoing protest has left many stranded, disrupted business, and worsened the economy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
