Russia and Ukraine Hold Key Peace Talks in Geneva Amid Trump’s Push for Quick Deal
February 17, 2026
Russia and Ukraine are in Geneva for important peace talks starting Tuesday. The talks will focus mainly on land issues. The conflict began four years ago on February 24, after Russia’s invasion. US President Donald Trump is pushing Kyiv and Moscow to reach a deal soon. Trump said, “Ukraine better come to the table, fast.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “The main issues concern both the territories and everything else related to the demands we have put forward.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed Russia wants to keep fighting and called for more pressure on Moscow. He said, “Only with sufficient pressure on Russia and clear security guarantees for Ukraine can this war realistically be brought to an end.” Russia demands Ukraine give up the last 20 percent of Donetsk, but Ukraine refuses. The Russian delegation is led by Vladimir Medinsky, with about 20 members. Ukraine’s team is led by Rustem Umerov and Kyrylo Budanov. US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner attend the talks for the Trump administration. Earlier talks in Abu Dhabi failed, and expectations remain low. Still, many hope this round could open doors to peace in Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.
