Bothwell Hit by 27 Arson Attacks Since 2021; Police Yet to Catch Suspects
February 17, 2026
Bothwell, a scenic town near Glasgow, has been plagued by 27 arson attacks from 2021 to 2025. Police Scotland data obtained by the Daily Record revealed attacks targeted restaurants, cars, and homes. Despite this, only one suspect has been identified for one fire, and no prosecutions have followed.
In early 2026, two cars were burned in a residential area. Last year, two Main Street restaurants, Nel & Co and The Cut steakhouse, were set on fire months apart. Nearby, the Da Luciano site remains empty after two firebomb attacks led to its demolition in 2023.
Many residents suspect these fires might be connected to gang activity. All three eateries were associated with Hugh O’Donnell, jailed in 2006 for running a brothel. O’Donnell denies knowing the attackers and claims his past associations do not explain the fires. He and his family are reportedly leaving Bothwell.
Vincent Marini, owner of another local restaurant burnt in 2019, blamed a "major Scottish crime family". He sold his site and moved away. Other victims, including wealthy business owners, have remained silent.
Residents complain the local council has not acted effectively to help businesses or clean up the charred sites. Some are frustrated by the "eyesores" harming Bothwell’s reputation.
Conservative councillor Kenny McCreary says community meetings show anger and calls for urgent action. Volunteer group Brighter Bothwell focuses on environmental care but notes the council must do more.
Police Scotland stresses no wider public risk and says investigations continue. They said the January car fires do not link to autumn attacks.
Former crime official Graeme Pearson says arson is a growing tactic used by criminals to intimidate, often involving hired individuals to set fires.
Despite troubles, local shopkeepers remain hopeful. Plans to install CCTV on Main Street may boost safety. McCreary wants the community to feel normal again soon.
