India’s AI Impact Summit Faces Crowd Chaos and Confusion on Day One
February 17, 2026
India’s AI Impact Summit began on a rocky note Monday with attendees reporting long queues, overcrowding, and poor management at the New Delhi venue. Many delegates told Reuters that unclear instructions caused confusion, especially after officials suddenly cleared the exhibition area for security checks ahead of arrivals of top leaders. Some speakers scheduled for Tuesday panels were still waiting for confirmation of their sessions and agendas. Poor signage and limited seating added to chaos at the summit, which expects around 250,000 visitors. Some sessions were unable to fit all those who wanted in. India’s IT ministry did not reply immediately to requests for comment. The event is important for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government as it aims to show India’s strength in technology. But the organizational problems could harm the government’s message. Officials see the summit as a key moment to boost developing nations’ voices in global AI governance. This is the first time the global AI event is held in the developing world, at New Delhi. Journalists also faced difficulties, with confusion over separate digital QR codes and physical passes. Many complained physical passes were not ready, and some had no seating for their work. On social media, attendees shared their frustration. Maitreya Wagh, co-founder of AI startup Bolna, said on X, “Gates are closed so could not access my own booth at the AI Summit. If you’re also stuck outside and wanted to visit the Bola team, dm me.” He added they might set up a small booth at a cafe nearby. The summit continues until February 20.
