Spain Launches Probe Into Social Media Giants Over AI Child Abuse Content
February 17, 2026
Spain is taking bold action against social media giants X, Meta, and TikTok. The government has asked prosecutors to investigate these platforms for spreading AI-generated child sexual abuse material. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on his X account, “These platforms are undermining the mental health, dignity, and rights of our children.” He added, “The state cannot allow this. The impunity of these giants must end.” This comes amid wider cracks down by European regulators on big tech for abuses like anti-competitive behavior and addictive design. Earlier, Sanchez proposed banning social media for children under 16, calling the platforms the “digital Wild West.” Currently, users must be at least 13 years old to join platforms like Facebook and TikTok. Some social media leaders, like X’s Elon Musk, criticized Sanchez’s move, calling him a “traitor to the people of Spain.” Telegram's Pavel Durov said these actions are not protections but steps towards “total control.” A recent Ipsos poll showed 82% of Spaniards support banning social media for kids under 14, up from 73% last year. Spain is not alone: Australia has banned social media for under-16s since December, fining platforms up to $33m if they do not block children. Australian officials blocked 4.7 million underage accounts by January 16. Other countries are also investigating AI-driven explicit content on social media, aiming to protect children worldwide.
