Disney Jr introduced Captain Durag, a new superhero on its show 'Hey AJ!' Episode 8 aired during Black History Month. The character, wearing a purple suit and durag mask, cleans up trash and fights trash monsters in Slime City. Captain Durag inspired the main character, AJ. But the superhero sparked strong criticism online. Many viewers called it disrespectful and stereotypical. On X, user Dom Lucre said, "Many Black Americans feel this is extremely disrespectful and even more so during Black History Month." TikTok creator Eli objected sharply, calling the show "absurdly outrageous" and demanded "justice" for the community. In response, one of the show's writers, Camille Corbet, shared on X that she created Captain Durag to celebrate Black culture and give kids a superhero of their own. She explained, "He is simply a homage to Blaxploitation films and a poke at respectability politics." Corbet urged everyone to "take a deep breath" and enjoy this new hero, saying, "Where's the joy? Why is everything so serious? We gotta celebrate our people." She asked fans to give the show another chance as Captain Durag will have many adventures ahead. Corbet added that the character shows pride in jobs that keep society running. The debate continues as audiences weigh the mix of culture, fun, and sensitivity around the character.
