Black Box Fire-Damaged in Ajit Pawar Plane Crash; Cockpit Voice Recorder Data Pending
February 18, 2026
A Learjet 45 crashed in Baramati, Maharashtra on January 28, killing Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, both pilots, a cabin crew member, and the leader’s staff. The plane belonged to Delhi-based VSR Private Limited. The black box, containing the digital flight data recorder (DFDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR), was recovered the day after the crash. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) reported on February 17, 2026, that the DFDR data has been successfully downloaded. However, the CVR "is undergoing detailed technical examination" due to fire damage. The AAIB said, "The aircraft was equipped with two independent flight recorders. Both recorders were exposed to intense heat for a prolonged period during the accident and sustained fire damage." The CVR was made by U.S.-based Honeywell, and the AAIB has requested specialized support from the country of manufacture to retrieve the data. Meanwhile, India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered audits of VSR Private Limited and 14 other large charter operators following the crash.
