Residents of Katpadi in Vellore are fighting back against bike theft, chain snatching, and possible drug use. Members of the Balaji Nagar Residents Welfare Association raised funds to buy 60 CCTV cameras. These cameras will be installed on 15 streets that lack surveillance. The total collected amount was about ₹2.5 lakh. The cameras were donated to Katpadi police, who currently monitor 210 cameras in the area. Resident N. Vinoth said, “The identified 15 streets in the residential colony in Katpadi do not have CCTV cameras. As a result, the area has been witnessing petty crimes in recent months. So, residents decided to pool funds for the cameras.” Inspector S. Dayalan told the press, “Residents’ cooperation to ensure security in an area is vital. The donated cameras will not only help prevent crime but also improve safety, especially among senior citizens and women in the area.” Each camera costs around ₹4,000. Installation, posts, cabling, and labour will be handled by local police using CSR funds, adding about ₹5,000 per camera. The new cameras will also help track vehicle movements. Residents believe this will help reduce crimes such as chain snatching, cellphone theft, house break-ins, and curb substance abuse. Since the area comes under the Vellore Corporation, the initiative may also address other civic issues over time.
