Man with Shotgun Arrested Near US Capitol Ahead of Trump’s State of the Union
February 18, 2026
Police in Washington DC caught an 18-year-old man running towards the US Capitol with a loaded shotgun and extra ammunition. The suspect was identified as Carter Camacho from Smyrna, Georgia. Police said he wore a tactical vest and gloves. He ran "several hundred yards" brandishing a combat-style shotgun before officers stopped him, US Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan said. Officers ordered him to drop the gun. He obeyed, lay on the ground, and was arrested. No motive was shared yet, but police are investigating if he aimed at Congress, which is not in session. "Who knows what would have happened if we wouldn’t have officers standing here?" Sullivan told reporters. Police found his Mercedes parked near the US Botanic Garden with a gas mask and Kevlar helmet inside. Sullivan said the suspect was not known to authorities and the vehicle wasn’t registered to him. "He has multiple addresses," Sullivan added. The suspect faces charges for unlawful activities, carrying a rifle without a license, and possession of unregistered firearms and ammo. This happened one week before President Donald Trump's State of the Union address. Police said security preparations for the event will not change. "We take the State of the Union very, very seriously," Sullivan said.
