93 Countries Condemn Israel’s West Bank Land Moves and Bar Al Aqsa Imam
February 18, 2026
Israel has barred Sheikh Muhammad Al-Abbasi, senior imam of the Al Aqsa Mosque, from entering the mosque compound in East Jerusalem. This move comes just before the holy month of Ramazan. Sheikh Al-Abbasi said he has been banned for a week without explanation, and the ban could be extended.
Meanwhile, Israel approved measures to increase its civilian authority over Areas A and B in the West Bank, covering about 40% of the territory. This includes plans to expand settlements westward toward Jerusalem in an area called Geva Binyamin or Adam. Israeli NGO Peace Now warned that this expansion would connect the new neighborhood directly to Jerusalem but remain in West Bank land, marking the first time since 1967 that Jerusalem’s borders would grow into occupied territory.
In a strong international reaction, 93 countries, including the European Union, the Arab League, and the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation (OIC), condemned Israel’s unilateral decisions as illegal. They called for an immediate reversal of the land annexation. The list of nations opposing the move spans continents and includes Algeria, Australia, Brazil, China, France, India, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the USA, and many others.
The eight-nation Muslim bloc warned that the land registration and settlement plans “constitute a grave escalation aimed at accelerating illegal settlement activity” and threaten the two-state solution. They said these actions undermine Palestinian rights and endanger peace prospects.
Israeli police stated they recommended issuing 10,000 permits for West Bank Palestinians to enter Jerusalem, highlighting ongoing tensions over access and control.
This controversy deepens the divide over the future of the West Bank and Jerusalem, raising alarms internationally about escalating conflict and the erosion of peace talks.
