IIA Bengaluru Opens Doors on National Science Day with Free Astronomy Fun

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Bengaluru will celebrate National Science Day with an Open Day event on February 21. It runs from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Koramangala campus. The public can enter for free and no prior registration is needed. Visitors will see many interactive experiments and demonstrations in astronomy and physics. There will be films, photos, and walk-through exhibits about IIA’s research and space sciences.
External groups such as Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium, VITM, and amateur astronomy clubs will have stalls. Highlights include a tethered balloon demo, laser optics experiments, sunspot and solar spectrum viewing, and exhibits on the Gaganyaan mission. Other attractions are ancient Indian astronomy instruments, multi-wavelength astronomy displays, atmospheric phenomena, a walkway space corridor, and a to-scale solar system model.
Children can enjoy astronomy games, and IIA’s archives will show artefacts from the 1700s. There will be astronomy merchandise on sale and a science treasure hunt. Nearby, the Survey of India will run exhibits on its campus.
Talks include a Kannada public talk on the solar system by Pavan Gramapurohit at 11 a.m., a Kannada science play at 12:30 p.m., and an English talk on merging stars by Annapurni Subramaniam at 3 p.m. Guided tours in Kannada will happen throughout the day. Limited parking is available at Survey of India quarters near Gate 2 next to Union Bank. Everyone is invited to take part in this exciting science celebration.
