Oscar-Winning Director’s Family Attacked Again in West Bank Amid Rising Tensions
February 18, 2026
Hamdan Ballal, co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, says his family home in Susya, Masafer Yatta, West Bank, was attacked by settlers on Sunday. The settlers have harassed Palestinian villagers for years. Two weeks ago, a court banned non-residents from the area, a rare win for Palestinians. Ballal called the police, but soldiers and a settler leader came instead. Ballal said, "The army came first and immediately raided our house, attacking everyone inside." Though Hamdan was away, his brother Mohammed became the settler’s target. Mohammed was forced to the ground, choked, and taken to hospital with neck injuries and bruises. Relatives who came to help were detained by the army. Two brothers, a nephew, and a cousin were blindfolded and handcuffed for three hours before release near a settler road. An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson confirmed the detentions but denied any attack or home raid, saying Palestinians refused to identify themselves. No Other Land spotlights settler violence and Israeli army involvement in displacing Palestinians in Masafer Yatta. The film’s revelations shocked global audiences, exposing a harsh campaign labeled "ethnic cleansing" by human rights groups. Recently, the Israeli government opened a West Bank land registry, letting Israelis claim occupied land for the first time since 1967. This move defies international law. Ballal described worsening conditions for Masafer Yatta's farmers. He said settlers killed livestock and soldiers stopped villagers from farming and grazing sheep. "It is not a life any more," he said. The Israeli army has declared farming areas as closed military zones and used force to keep Palestinians off their land. In July 2024, the international court ruled Israel's occupation and settlements illegal, calling for withdrawal and reparations. Ballal said the new government steps formalize a brutal reality. Despite global attention from his film, the conditions remain grim. He hopes future generations will change international policies, saying, "Some of those who watch the film and know the truth can [enter] government or diplomacy and do something and stop this maybe in the future."
