On February 17, Director General of Police (Prisons) Alok Kumar visited the Central prison at Hindalga in Belagavi, Karnataka. He sought a report on how some prisoners managed to make mobile calls despite network signal jammers in place. "There have been reports that some inmates were using mobile phones and SIM cards. Police officials have seized phones and SIM cards during raids in jails in Belagavi, and in other places. We want to find out whether it is a technical issue or something else," Mr Kumar said. He carried out a thorough review of security measures inside and outside the jail. He checked how prisoners were supervised and how staff operated. The DGP warned officials, "Strict action will be taken if they fail to stop illegal activities like mobile phone use, drug possession or other violations inside the jail." Hindalga prison is one of Karnataka's oldest and is located near a busy main road. Mr Kumar noted security challenges. "Recently, there have been incidents of ganja, SIM cards, and mobile phones being thrown into the jail by outsiders. I have told officials to stop this," he said. He pledged to strengthen security and surveillance in all Karnataka jails. The DGP was accompanied by top police officials, including IGPs Chetan Singh Rathod and T.P. Shesha, Belagavi Police Commissioner Borase Bhushan Gulabrao, Superintendent of Police K. Ramarajan, and jail Superintendent Krishnamurthy.
