Third British Man Dies in Avalanche in French Alps Near La Grave
February 18, 2026
A third British man has been killed in an avalanche in the French Alps. He was skiing with four others near La Grave on Tuesday morning when the avalanche hit, local media reported. Mountain rescuers arrived quickly. The Briton and a Polish citizen were declared dead, the BBC reported. This tragedy follows another avalanche last Friday in Val d’Isère, where two British men died among three fatalities. Local authorities are investigating the causes of both avalanches, according to the BBC. On Tuesday, Meteo-France, France’s national weather service, issued an avalanche warning for the northern Alps and Hautes-Alpes region, including La Grave. The risk remains high on Wednesday due to thawing ice under bright sunshine. A UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said, “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in France and are in contact with the local authorities.”
