The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church sharply criticized the Kerala government's move to extend bar hours. Bars and beer parlours can now operate from 10 a.m. to midnight. Five-star hotels with FL3 licenses may remain open till 3 a.m. after paying ₹5 lakh yearly. Biju Oommen, association secretary of the Church, said this move "ensures liquor supply round the clock." He warned it would "destroy an entire generation." When asked about the government's aim, he questioned, "Is it the only way for you to fill the coffers? Is the interest of bar owners more valued than the tears of the mothers in the State?" He accused the government of prioritizing bar owners' profits over the well-being of youth. "The government should make it clear if it wants the youth to sleep over in a bar," he added. The Church's strong reaction came just a day after the announcement. The government had extended bar hours by two hours, hoping to increase revenue while offering privileges to top-class hotels. But critics fear this will increase alcohol-related problems among young people in Kerala.
