Israeli forces killed two Palestinians in separate incidents in Gaza on Wednesday. One was a child killed by an Israeli drone in northern Gaza. Another, 20-year-old Muhand Jamal al-Najjar, was shot near Khan Younis in the south. Three more Palestinians were wounded in other attacks across Gaza. The violence continues amid Israel’s blockade of the Rafah crossing to Egypt, limiting medical evacuations. Since the crossing partially reopened two and a half weeks ago, only 260 patients have been allowed to leave Gaza for urgent medical care. This is a small fraction of around 18,500 people needing evacuation, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported to Al Jazeera. An Egyptian border official had earlier promised at least 50 patients would cross daily, but just five left on the first day. Human rights groups and the World Health Organization call for immediate free access to medical care outside Gaza. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged for reopening medical routes and stressed the need to improve Gaza’s health services to reduce dependence on evacuations. Meanwhile, returnees have reported harsh treatment by Israeli soldiers, including humiliating searches and intense interrogations at the crossing. Since mid-October, over 600 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,600 wounded, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The ongoing violence and tight blockade worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
