Kozhikode witnessed its second fire at a major textile shop in the busy Palayam area on Tuesday. Luckily, no one was hurt. This blaze once again highlighted weak fire safety in crowded business zones. Rescue teams controlled the fire quickly. Officials said prompt firefighter action saved the multi-storey textile building. This second fire in the same place is a serious worry. Kozhikode district has seen more than 160 fire outbreaks in just one-and-a-half months. Last year, big fires struck at the mofussil bus stand and Kozhikode Medical College, showing ongoing safety problems. A top Fire and Rescue Services official said, "It was the spot intervention by firefighters that saved the multi-storey textile building on Tuesday. The second incident at the same building is a matter of grave concern, and it will be taken up seriously for corrective measures." Experts are calling for a full fire safety audit across the district. They want checks on high-rise buildings, hospitals, and commercial places. Many say the government’s recent move to extend fire no-objection certificates validity to five years is worrying without proper audits. Former building inspector V. Manoj said, "The Disaster Management Authority has a crucial role to play in this area as it can easily expose those who cold-shoulder safety norms. At-least vulnerable areas and prime spots should be audited." He also warned that illegal regularisation of faulty buildings should stop immediately. Four years ago, a detailed fire audit found serious safety problems in 140 commercial buildings, including 107 multi-storey ones. Over 300 buildings were checked then. The violations report was sent to the Disaster Management Authority. Later, Kozhikode Corporation found around 3,000 unauthorised constructions. Some were fixed and regularised, but many builders delayed action citing technical issues. Sources reveal there was no proper follow-up on fixing the safety problems. This latest fire incident revives demand for urgent action to protect public safety in Kozhikode’s busy commercial sectors.
