Shivamogga City Corporation has started removing road humps that do not meet engineering standards after a fatal accident on Savalanga Road. On February 12, Suhail Ulla, a Ragigudda resident, hit a newly made speed bump at high speed while riding his two-wheeler. He was thrown off the bike and suffered a serious head injury. Suhail died three days later in a city hospital. CCTV footage captured the accident and went viral on social media. Local residents quickly helped remove the problematic speed bump using an earth mover. This accident was not isolated; other minor mishaps were reported due to unscientific speed humps lacking proper signage and reflective paint. A senior citizen also fell off a two-wheeler after hitting a hump on the same road. Commuters on the road linking the railway station to Vinoba Nagar complained about jolts from the newly laid hump near the railway station. People demanded that the authorities remove unsafe road humps immediately. On Tuesday, Commissioner Mayanna Gowda held a meeting and formed a team to inspect recently constructed humps across the city. Officials inspected over 15 humps using two- and four-wheelers to identify those not meeting Indian Road Congress standards. The commissioner told media that all unscientific humps would be removed and new measures put in place to ensure compliance with safety standards.
