Japan Travel Warning Issued After Hongkonger Attacked in Sapporo
February 18, 2026
The Chinese consulate warned its citizens after a Hongkonger was beaten on the head with a beer bottle in a Sapporo restaurant. The incident happened early Wednesday, and Japanese police arrested a suspect at the scene. The consulate said, “The [consulate] has made representations to the local police, requiring the police to seriously hold the perpetrators accountable in accordance with the law and effectively safeguard the safety and legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens.” It also added, “The Chinese consulate general in Sapporo once again reminds Chinese citizens to avoid travelling to Japan in the near future, and reminds Chinese citizens in the consular district to pay close attention to the local security situation, improve safety awareness and strengthen self-protection.” The attack takes place amid rising tension between Beijing and Tokyo. Relations have stalled since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s remarks in November about possible military intervention if Taiwan is attacked. Beijing views Taiwan as part of China and is ready to reclaim it by force if needed. Most countries, including the US and Japan, do not recognize Taiwan as a separate state, but Washington supports Taiwan with weapons to counter forceful attempts. High-level talks between the Hong Kong government and the Japanese consulate in the city have also stopped due to this diplomatic strain. Sapporo is known as a top winter holiday spot with 2 million residents and hosts a famous snow festival every February. The city is also famous for Sapporo beer.
