Spanish Man Hacked Hotel Booking System, Reserved Luxury Rooms for One Cent
February 18, 2026
Spanish police arrested a 20-year-old man for hacking a hotel booking website. He reserved luxury hotel rooms, normally costing up to €1,000 per night, by paying only one euro cent. Police said he caused losses of more than €20,000 during several stays. The suspect was caught at a Madrid hotel where he was staying. Authorities said he hacked the payment system by altering its validation process. This allowed his transactions to be approved after entering just one cent as the payment amount. At first, the bookings seemed normal and legitimate. The problem was detected only when the payment system transferred the actual amount of €0.01 to the hotels. The investigation began after a travel booking site noticed suspicious activity. Police completed their inquiry in just four days. Interestingly, the suspect used his real name for the bookings. During his last stay in Madrid, he stayed for four nights, which would normally cost €4,000. Records also show he consumed minibar items and left other bills unpaid. Police hinted that the man made similar bookings at other hotels, but did not provide details. Reports say he had been arrested earlier in the Canary Islands after staying at another luxury hotel. This case is the first of its kind discovered in Spain, highlighting a new form of cybercrime in the travel industry.
