Twelve people died on Wednesday in a firework shop explosion in Hubei, central China. This tragic incident occurred just days after a similar blast in Jiangsu killed eight. The explosion caused a fire that spread quickly but was put out within an hour. Authorities have launched an investigation and detained several people for improper handling of fireworks. During Lunar New Year, fireworks are traditionally used across China to bring good luck and chase away evil. However, many regions have imposed bans or limits due to safety and air quality concerns. Recently, some cities have relaxed bans to allow controlled use. On Monday, after the Jiangsu explosion, China’s Ministry of Emergency Management warned all regions to improve supervision of firework businesses. Officials were urged to "resolutely prevent" similar accidents and to assess safety risks thoroughly. The ministry stressed that fireworks remain the biggest danger during the Spring Festival and called for constant vigilance. The government is determined to stop major disasters and reduce firework-related risks during the holiday period.
