Iran Security Official Fires on Mourners at Cemetery Amid Protest Commemorations
February 19, 2026
In Abdanan, west Iran, a security official appeared to fire shots at a crowd gathered at a cemetery on Tuesday. The people were commemorating those killed during the government's brutal crackdown on protesters last month. Iranians traditionally hold ceremonies 40 days after a death. The protests peaked on 8 and 9 January with thousands killed during one of the deadliest crackdowns in recent years.
Videos verified by BBC Verify and BBC Persian show mourners chanting anti-government slogans, including “death to Khamenei,” referring to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. As an armored vehicle passed, a uniformed official fired two shots towards the crowd. Screams and panic followed the gunfire. A puff of smoke appeared near the gun each time a shot was fired.
Another video captured several gunshots and smoke as people ran away from the scene. State media IRIB News claimed the event was peaceful and denied any injuries or deaths.
The ceremony honored people like Alireza Seydi, a teenager from Abdanan reportedly killed in the protests. The gatherings took place in several cities, including Tehran and Mashhad, where mourners also shouted anti-government slogans. Meanwhile, official state ceremonies featured chants of “death to America” led by government and military officials.
The protests began in late December over economic issues but escalated after Reza Pahlavi called for nationwide protests. Human Rights Activists News Agency confirmed over 7,000 deaths and 53,000 arrests during the unrest. Khamenei blamed the US for the deaths last month, acknowledging thousands lost in the protests.
