UN Security Council Moves Gaza Meeting to Avoid Clash with Trump’s Board of Peace
February 19, 2026
The United Nations Security Council has pushed its meeting on the Israel-Palestine conflict to Wednesday afternoon local time. This change avoids overlap with US President Donald Trump’s "Board of Peace" convening in Washington on Thursday. The council will discuss the Gaza ceasefire and Israel's new plans to increase control and settler presence in the occupied West Bank. Several foreign ministers, including those from the UK, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and Indonesia, will attend. Palestine’s UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour said, "We expect from the international community to stop Israel and end their illegal effort against annexation, whether in Washington or in New York." On February 8, Israel approved measures easing the seizure of Palestinian land in the West Bank. Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen called this "de facto sovereignty," blocking Palestinian statehood, while Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich vowed to "encourage" Palestinian emigration. Palestinian groups report ongoing settler attacks, with four Palestinians wounded recently near East Jerusalem. The UN meeting will also review the US-brokered Gaza ceasefire from October 10. Although Hamas has released captives and aid has increased, key challenges remain, including Hamas disarmament and Gaza rebuilding. Trump announced $5 billion pledged by the Board of Peace for Gaza reconstruction, with thousands of personnel aimed at stabilization. Indonesia plans to send up to 8,000 troops by June for a peace mission in Gaza. This reshuffled meeting shows tensions between the UN and US peace efforts as both address the fragile situation in the region.
